A participatory process is a sequence of participatory activities (e.g. first filling out a survey, then making proposals, discussing them in face-to-face or virtual meetings, and finally prioritizing them) with the aim of defining and making a decision on a specific topic.

Examples of participatory processes are: a process of electing committee members (where candidatures are first presented, then debated and finally a candidacy is chosen), participatory budgets (where proposals are made, valued economically and voted on with the money available), a strategic planning process, the collaborative drafting of a regulation or norm, the design of an urban space or the production of a public policy plan.

As part of the activities planned within Bauhaus4Med, the Tuscany Region has selected the municipality of Minucciano (LU) as a pilot area to experiment with new approaches to local development in line with the principles of the New European Bauhaus. The Business Support Policies Sector of the Tuscany Region is a project partner and will coordinate the first phase, dedicated to identifying the challenges for the green transition and the environmental threats to be addressed in the relevant territories.

The initiative, the only pilot action in Tuscany within the Bauhaus4Med project, saw the active involvement of the Department of Architecture (DIDA) at the University of Florence, through the students of the Design for Sustainability course. The students had the opportunity to explore the Garfagnana area, engage with local administrators and businesses—including Garfagnana Innovazione, a company specializing in stone processing and known for its participation in international projects such as the Digital Stone Project. The entire process, which will continue throughout 2025 and 2026, represents an innovative model of sustainable and inclusive development, where beauty is not conceived as a decorative element, but as a concrete driver of territorial transformation and social innovation.

The process was launched on July 25, 2024, with an initial institutional meeting held at the Garfagnana Innovazione headquarters in Gramolazzo (Minucciano). On this occasion, the Bauhaus4Med project was presented, with a focus on urban regeneration and circular economy. This was followed by a field visit on November 19, 2024, in Gramolazzo, allowing students to gain direct insight into the local dynamics and the environmental and social sustainability challenges. Subsequently, on December 14, 2024, a public participation event was held using the World Café method, actively involving the local community in the shared definition of priorities for the future of the territory, which led to the development of the students' project proposals.
